Clutter is part of life, but having new cabinetry and an organized system is like being born again.  Our designers tackle every kitchen project with their eye on the prize, complete order with impeccable style.  It starts with the realization that we have a lot of stuff, and sometimes it gets in the way.  The secret is to have a place for all of it to go.

The first step is a palette cleanse. In this case the existing cabinets were in great shape so we helped the homeowners with a donation to Habitat for Humanity Restore Milwaukee.  On hand is our Project Manager Mike Jeffrey to uninstall the old and remodel the space before installing brand new cabinetry.

We will take you on a walk-through of your daily kitchen routine in order to analyze where you are wasting space and effort.  Also a realistic look at what you are storing, and why, will be helpful. Then we get to work on the cabinet layout.
before and after kitchen design drawings

This new design features an essential work triangle customized for easy flow, in, around and through the space.  We specify the type of cabinets needed and interior features to best store each kitchen’s content.

Fluidity is key; refrigerator to sink, pantry to countertop, squirrel watching window to water bowl . . . .

Kitchen cabinet design before and after

When it’s time for filling those cabinets, we encourage a new approach to the traditional system.  Consider grouping items you use most often together in an easy to access cabinet location.  Breakfast items like toaster, waffle maker, and fry pan should be near your breakfast prep area.   This could mean that your cookware is stored according to frequency of use rather than type.  Apply the same thought process to china and serving pieces.  Don’t waste valuable real estate on things that are only used occasionally.

Spices are the exception, they should be stored together on pull-out racks for easy assessment.

before and after cabinetry with countertop organization

KitchenAids and cookbooks go together like wine and cheese, so stage your countertop with attractive items that are useful in order to save cabinet space.

And remember that drawers offer the most organized easy to access storage.

new cabinery with large storage cabinets as island base

We like to group large cabinets together out of the work zone to accommodate medium appliances, serving pieces, Costo-sized supplies and that 50 lb bag of dog food.  Here we used double door base cabinets on the front side of an extra-large island for a furniture like appearance.

Finish off your new kitchen with an artistic backsplash.  This one from Bella Tile and Stone is the perfect backdrop for an orderly life.

There are two types of kitchen people, those who love theirs and those who are under-whelmed every time they pass through.   Shouldn’t you adore one of the most important rooms in your home?  It’s possible to completely change your disposition with a kitchen remodeling assist from Geneva Cabinet Company, LLC.

We’re sure you’ve heard the advice, “start with a plan”.  We like to simplify the planning process into tips that will change your BEFORE into an AFTER you love!

#1 Scrutinize your kitchen layout

What currently works and what just feels dreary? We recommend a comprehensive assessment to start you on the right track before you begin any kitchen remodeling project.

#2 Work with your existing footprint when possible

You’ll notice in the floor plan below that we opened up the space by moving the bathroom to the outside corner.   A closer look reveals that the plumbing is actually in the same location.  Any time you can renovate a room without disturbing plumbing you are on the side of savings.   Kitchen Remodel floor plan before and after by Geneva Cabinet Company LLC

#3 Consider traffic patterns and work flow to avoid bottlenecks

Yes, the kitchen work triangle is still relevant.  Start by considering the choreography of people who are in the kitchen together.  Don’t force everyone to wiggle around obstacles, and each other.  Notice that the refrigerator in this AFTER plan has been moved to the outskirts of the work triangle to avoid a crash and possible burn near the cooking surface.

#4 Add storage not just space.

We’re not saying that because we sell cabinetry.  It is more cost efficient to maximize storage space without adding square feet.  We like to design with tall cabinets that reclaim wasted wall space. They are perfect for storing seasonal and rarely used pieces. For more storage ideas click here.

#5 Configure for Convenience

Doors or drawers? It’s important to know how you will use each area before you choose the type of cabinet storage.  Drawers offer natural organization and easy access.  Cabinets are ideal for versatility and storing bulky items.

#6 Keep It Open

You  will use things more often when stored on open shelving for top-of-mind awareness.  Even the interior of your cabinet door can be updated with visible storage for often used condiments.

#7 Divide and Conquer

Move over Maria Kondo, we have organization tools that will definitely change your life.  Not only do door and drawer organizers keep you efficient, just opening the cabinet will give you joy!

#7 The Landing Zone

To keep the entire home clutter-free we love the idea of a landing zone, this one is just off of the kitchen.  Dedicating a space to collect things like keys and jackets will keep your home tidy.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with Schilthelm Builders on this kitchen remodeling project! Cabinetry from Plato Woodwork, Inc. was used in their crisp Arctic White finish on the Artisan style door.

mother daughter play kitchen

Like mother, like daughter, right? What 3-year-old doesn’t watch mommy in the kitchen and dream of her own pint-size version. Now add to equation that mommy is a kitchen designer and the standards just got a little higher. The internet did not disappoint. Play kitchens have really upgraded since I was a little girl. Current versions include all the amenities of real kitchens. “Stainless” finishes, recycling bins, ironing centers and even “smart” options like a place for your tablet are all out there.

Some of the questions I considered when selecting my daughter’s kitchen were the same questions I ask of my clients. What style do you like? Traditional, vintage, contemporary or a combination. Color, materials, size, storage options; all important factors to consider. There are so many choices, how do I decide? No, how do we decide? Factor in that I’m negotiating with a 3-year-old. Limiting her choices to two seemed more appropriate.

Enlisting the help of a professional kitchen designer can really make the process of designing your dream kitchen much more enjoyable. Designers guide clients through the process by showing them a myriad of options and helping them narrow down the choices. In the end the kitchen should reflect the lifestyle and personality of the homeowner. Maybe poppy red is not your thing but for Ella it is truly her dream kitchen.
