There are two types of kitchen people, those who love theirs and those who are under-whelmed every time they pass through.   Shouldn’t you adore one of the most important rooms in your home?  It’s possible to completely change your disposition with a kitchen remodeling assist from Geneva Cabinet Company, LLC.

Kitchen remodel by Geneva Cabinet Company before and after view

We’re sure you’ve heard the advice, “start with a plan”.  We like to simplify the planning process into tips that will change your BEFORE into an AFTER you love!

#1 Scrutinize your kitchen layout

What currently works and what just feels dreary? We recommend a comprehensive assessment to start you on the right track before you begin any kitchen remodeling project.

#2 Work with your existing footprint when possible

You’ll notice in the floor plan below that we opened up the space by moving the bathroom to the outside corner.   A closer look reveals that the plumbing is actually in the same location.  Any time you can renovate a room without disturbing plumbing you are on the side of savings.   Kitchen Remodel floor plan before and after by Geneva Cabinet Company LLC

#3 Consider traffic patterns and work flow to avoid bottlenecks

Yes, the kitchen work triangle is still relevant.  Start by considering the choreography of people who are in the kitchen together.  Don’t force everyone to wiggle around obstacles, and each other.  Notice that the refrigerator in this AFTER plan has been moved to the outskirts of the work triangle to avoid a crash and possible burn near the cooking surface.

#4 Add storage not just space.

We’re not saying that because we sell cabinetry.  It is more cost efficient to maximize storage space without adding square feet.  We like to design with tall cabinets that reclaim wasted wall space. They are perfect for storing seasonal and rarely used pieces. For more storage ideas click here.

#5 Configure for Convenience

Doors or drawers? It’s important to know how you will use each area before you choose the type of cabinet storage.  Drawers offer natural organization and easy access.  Cabinets are ideal for versatility and storing bulky items.

#6 Keep It Open

You  will use things more often when stored on open shelving for top-of-mind awareness.  Even the interior of your cabinet door can be updated with visible storage for often used condiments.

#7 Divide and Conquer

Move over Maria Kondo, we have organization tools that will definitely change your life.  Not only do door and drawer organizers keep you efficient, just opening the cabinet will give you joy!

#7 The Landing Zone

To keep the entire home clutter-free we love the idea of a landing zone, this one is just off of the kitchen.  Dedicating a space to collect things like keys and jackets will keep your home tidy.

We thoroughly enjoyed working with Schilthelm Builders on this kitchen remodeling project! Cabinetry from Plato Woodwork, Inc. was used in their crisp Arctic White finish on the Artisan style door.

We can all agree that this is a perfectly nice kitchen.  But our homeowners were hoping to elevate their style while increasing storage and adding some much needed island seating.

Enter the talented kitchen and bath designer, Joyce Zuelke, ckd.  She created a more functional space with the addition of a redesigned island.  There is even a new Pinterest worthy coffee bar for good measure.  Along with updates to the lighting and some stunning ceiling detail, this kitchen takes on an entirely new character.

Geneva Cabinet Company kitchen with new island Plato Cabinetry

Kitchen Island Update

The original kitchen was created with cabinetry from Bea Industries in Elkhorn, Wi.  It had a user-friendly U-shape layout.  While stylish and open, our homeowner was looking for an improved kitchen island that would step-up the function of the space.

Cabinetry from Plato Woodwork, Inc. was selected in a deep stain which enhanced the natural wood grain.  This rich finish served as a distinct contrast to ground the bright white kitchen.

The island is topped with a lovely Cambria quartz countertop in the Ella pattern from their Marble Collection.  Subtle veining reflects the warm island stain while soft white connects to the surrounding cabinetry.  It works beautifully with the perimeter of granite countertops.

Geneva Cabinet Company Lake Geneva Wi island elevation with proper clearance

But it’s not just about having a gorgeous kitchen, the layout must be functional for a kitchen that is comfortable and convenient.  Notice the 48 ½” clearance between the island and the stove for safe usage when the oven door is open.  The close proximity to the island steam oven keeps the cooking zone tight and functional.

The island also features the secret to great cabinet storage, easy access pull-out shelving.  They will keep everyday items visible and within reach to improve daily workflow.

The key difference between an indoor kitchen and an outdoor kitchen is entertainment value.   Cooking outdoors turns everyday meal prep into a special occasion.  The variety of equipment for outdoor kitchens can take your weekend BBQ to the next level and provide culinary inspiration for entertaining family and friends.  Keep our design guidelines in mind and create the perfect outdoor cooking venue for the upcoming summer season.

Choose the location with convenience in mind.

The best location will blur the line between indoor and outdoor space allowing you to move easily without wasted footsteps back and forth. Certainly your outdoor kitchen will be used for entertaining, but remember that often you will want to cook outdoor and bring food indoors to dine.  When located close to your indoor kitchen, amenities for each area can be shared.   This could add up to a substantial savings on the overall project.

Design for functionality

Outdoor kitchens come in all shapes and sizes to go along with your space and budget.  The basic plan should provide an area for food prep, cooking and serving. Before creating your layout, locate the most direct access to gas, electric and water utilities.  This will cut down on the additional expense of running services further than necessary.

Material Selections

Choose the materials and finishes carefully with respect to your climate.  Cabinetry, countertops and appliances should be maintenance free.  Include stainless steel, teak and concrete for long lasting waterproof design.  We used Danver Stainless Steel Outdoor Kitchen Cabinetry in the featured projects to achieve high design, exceptional efficiency and lasting durability.

Beyond the Basics

The design options are endless, but once you cover your basic cooking functions it’s time to add even more convenience.  A sink in the outdoor kitchen makes clean-up a breeze and storage cabinetry will keep provisions at your fingertips.

Refrigeration is a plus for self-service beverages and holding perishables before cooking.

Specialized Cooking

The latest specialized outdoor kitchens feature artisan pizza ovens, slow-cook grills, smokers, and stoves with infra-red burners.  Any outdoor cooking enthusiast will love the restaurant quality options now available.

Protect yourself rain or shine

Protect yourself and your equipment with a little overhead coverage from a canopy or pergola.  Nothing will spoil the fun like the typical midwest storm blowing through.  Plan ahead so the party doesn’t become waterlogged or wither in the heat.   While you’re at it, add air circulation with ceiling fans and outdoor lighting so the good times don’t end at sundown.

Stop by our showroom and take a tour of this complete outdoor kitchen.   Designers Stephanie Nelson or Joyce Zuelke, ckd can answer your questions and walk you through the design of an outdoor kitchen where you can expand all of your cooking and entertaining possibilities.

Ahh, the Pros and Cons list.  An evaluation technique credited to Benjamin Franklin way back in 1772.  While it may have limitations for making decisions of the heart, it certainly comes in handy when comparing your options for countertops.     There are many attractive possibilities.   So, how do you choose the best countertop for your home?  Simple, just review our countertop Pros and Cons list and make your decision with confidence.    A word of caution, we are biased in the direction of beautiful!

Countertop Pros and Cons

Quartz Countertops

We begin with Quartz because it is easily the most popular countertop today.   It is often referred to as Engineered Quartz or Engineered Stone, and  frequently confused with Quartzite (more on that later).  The quartz mineral is fused with a combination of polymers, pigments and powdered or ground materials to form this extremely hard surface.

Pros

High Durability

Scratch & Stain Resistant

Bacteria Resistant

Easy to maintain

Non-Pourous ( will not absorb moisture)

Cons

Not as heat tolerant as Granite or Quartzite

Quartzite Countertops

This is the real deal.  Quartzite is a naturally-occurring metamorphic stone and each slab will have the unique quality which is inherent to all natural stone surfaces.  Quartz crystals formed from sandstone were fused together by nature  millions of years ago.   The super strong statement material is one that we have come to love and appreciate,  especially for kitchen islands.

Pros

High Durability (harder than Granite and Quartz)

Scratch & Stain Resistant

Easy to maintain

Cons

This natural stone must be sealed

Granite Countertops

Granite is extremely durable and rarely scratches or chips.  Every slab will have a visual quality characteristic to the region of origin. It is a porous surface that can come pre-sealed or should be sealed yearly.

Pros

High Durability

Heat Resistant

Scratch & Stain Resistant

Easy to maintain

Cons

This natural stone must be sealed and may require resealing

Could be susceptible to staining from oils, citrus and alcohol

Extreme hardness may cause breakage if something is dropped on it

Marble Countertops

The ultimate choice for classic luxury.   It is a softer stone known for the rich patina developed over time.  Marble stands up to heat but is susceptible to staining.  The consistently smooth and cool nature performs perfectly as a pastry surface.

Pros

Will withstand some heat

Resistant to chips and dents

Smoothest surface – Ideal for pastry preparation

Develops a lovely patina

Cons

The porous surface may be susceptible to scratches or staining from acidic liquids

Sealing will need to be maintained

Solid Surface

Here we have your Corian, and other brands that started the solid surface countertop revolution.  A wonderful variety of color and pattern is constantly evolving and improving.   The molded construction allows it to take on many shapes and accommodate an undermount or integral sink.

Pros

Durable

Resistant to mildew, bacteria and stains

Seamlessly accommodates integral sinks

Easy to maintain

Repairs are possible

Non-Pourous (will not absorb moisture)

Cons

Heat sensitive

Possibility of scratching

Glass Countertops

Glass countertops are a unique combination of function and art for a modern statement in the kitchen or bar area.  Custom designs will elevate your style with an open suspended quality.  The material can be translucent, colorful or texturized to create special effects like you will see from our friends at  Studio L Glassworks

Pros

Moderate Durability

Heat Resistant

Stain Resistent

Resists Bacteria – Extremely safe for foods

Cons

Susceptible to scratching or chiping

Stainless Steel Countertops

Add a Top Chef quality to any kitchen with the visual punch of stainless steel countertops.  Super hygienic and durable, these countertops can be integrated with stainless steel sinks and backsplashes for a seamless professional look.

Pros

High durability

Heat Resistant

Germ Resistant

Easy to Maintenance

Will not stain

Cons

Susceptible to scratches-but they can be polished out

Soapstone Countertops

Your science class lab table is reborn!  The sophistication of this natural stone is an up-and-coming look for modern and classic styles at home.  The color ranges from light to dark gray.  Like marble, the developing patina accounts for much of it’s appeal to the organically inclined.

Pros

Heat Resistant

Food Safe

Stain resistant

Develops a stunning patina

Cons

Occasionally require treatment to seal and maintain appearance

Slabs are smaller and may require seaming

Wood Countertops

The allure of natural products is growing in popularity, especially when it comes to wood countertops. We specialize in natural wood countertops from Grothouse Lumber because they excel in beautiful construction with a wide variety of wood species.

Pros

Moderate durability

Natural Luxurious Appearance

Warm Appearance and Tactile Quality

Develops a warm patina

May be re-surfaced to restore appearance

Cons

Low heat resistance

Maintenance is needed

Should be sealed with a food safe sealer

Mixing and matching is an option that we whole-heartily support!  What better way to pair your favorite looks with the perfect functional application.   This will help you create a style all your own!

Do we have a clear favorite?  Actually, no.

Because it all depends on how the countertop will be used and where it will be installed.  It is one of the details that we love to address when designing the cabinetry for your home.

It is also the reason we have so many different countertops featured in vignettes around our showroom.  Here you can touch and feel the different options in materials to see how they look with various cabinet styles.  You will experience first hand the beautiful colors and patterns offered by each of the brands we feature.

The countertops you choose will add the final style statement to your overall design!

When you are a designer the creative juices start flowing the moment your eyes open in the morning. From the outfits I lay out for myself and my three-year-old, to projects I’m designing for my clients.

A good designer doesn’t stop at just the basic cabinetry design. Just like my outfits don’t stop at just the basic clothing. Accessories, like the perfect jacket, jewelry, and shoes, play a big part in pulling the entire look together and sending a message about personal style.

The same thing applies to designing cabinetry in my clients’ homes. I start with a basic, functional plan and then work with the client to develop their individual style. Adding the countertops, lighting and plumbing fixtures is like layering on the accessories and “jewelry”. It begins to make a statement and bring personality to the design. It’s like taking a little black dress and adding either pearls and stilettos, or a jean jacket and cowboy boots. It’s all about individual style.

One tip I like to share with my clients is to add an unexpected detail or “secret treasure” like a flea market find or artistic piece that gives a punch of personality to the room. Price doesn’t matter on this one. It is all about including a piece that is a conversation starter. Think back to that little black dress and pairing that pearl necklace with those cowboy boots. Now you’re talking my language!
